Mk2 Granada. Ford’s biggest car here at the time, now seemingly dwarfed by the Dacia beside it.

Note the fancy GL spec, not just your poverty spec L. Also note the 2 l engine as opposed to the posh peoples 2.3 or 2.8. Displaying the exact model on the back was very much a thing then so you could show just how far up the corporate ladder you were.

Also n ote that you can actually see out the front corners.

Keeping in mind that I pay very little attention to most passenger cars, and thus this may be an absurd observation, but does that look a bit like a Saab or am I smoking crack?

I don't see any resemblance so I'm afraid I'm going with the crack.

Neat. Does it actually taper up to the window line (like narrower below and above it)? Seems like an interesting way to maximize elbow room but makes it look kinda strange.

The built quality on these was worse than any Citroen

Are those red consular tags on it?  If so, that’s a broke-ass country.

A neighbour’s father had a blue GL saloon and a friend’s father had a blue Ghia estate, identical to this. It was quite a size.

I’m guessing tags are what we call number plates? Nope, cars here had red plates at the rear and white at the front until 1987. That Granada is late 70s or early 80s.

Aren’t cars generally designed like that? Absolutely flat sides aren’t usual.

To an extent, but the widest part is usually far closer to the bottom of the car. From that angle it looks like the bottom of the doors is dramatically tapered to be narrower from the window line.

Which doesn’t seem to be the case from this angle, so it might be a trick of the perspective
